FAQ: Buying the right Windows 7 upgrade
When I wrote on Monday about the ins and outs of what counts as proper licensing of Windows 7, I was worried that it might turn into a flame war. But, instead, readers sent in a whole bunch of really good questions on the intricacies of licensing Windows 7 that went beyond the basics I had covered.

Google offers JavaScript programming tools
With a project called Closure Tools, Google plans on Thursday to start helping developers who aspire to match the company’s proficiency in creating Web sites and Web applications.
Google is a strong proponent of using JavaScript to write Web-based programs, part of its Web-centric ethos. Microsoft aims to match Cupertino’s retail glitz
Microsoft has been keeping rather mum on what to expect from its new retail stores, but sources tell CNET News to expect lots of flashy monitors, fancy PCs, Surface table-tops, as well as a giant display.
The outlets, which will be called simply the “Microsoft Store,” closely resemble the mock-ups that leaked earlier this year, according to one source. They also borrow some of their design cues from Apple’s retail outlets, including an “answer bar” that seems to closely mimic Apple’s Genius Bar. Read the rest of this entry »

How Chrome users can scrub Yahoo logo off Flickr
Those of you who hate the recent arrival of Yahoo’s logo on Flickr now have an easy way to erase it–and get a number of useful features–as long as you’re using an edgy version of Chrome.
Chrome extensions let people customize the browser’s behavior, and the Fittr Flickr extension from Gmail programmer Dan Pupius whips Yahoo’s photo-sharing site into shape. Some people use extensions for using Delicious bookmarks, banishing ads, and filling out forms, but this is my favorite Chrome extension so far. Read the rest of this entry »
